Shop Traveling Home Episode 1: Brazil Inspired Kitchen

This has been a very exciting week! We announced our latest show: Traveling Home with The Bucket List Family and are so thrilled with the response already! We can't wait to share each room with you week by week as we remodel and decorate Garrett and Jessica's beach cottage.

This week's room: The Kitchen. The Bucket List Family traveled to Brazil and tasked our at-home experts, Andy and Candis, to create a space that felt fresh and vibrant. We enlisted the help of Wayfair to make it all possible!

Our favorite thing about Wayfair is definitely the vast selection that it offers. While designing the space, Candis had A LOT to chose from but she was able to use some of their amazing website features to make her job a little easier. Her favorite was the ability to add a "heart" to a product, save it in the correct room or project and then create a mood board for that project.

From that mood board, she could really see what was working together and what wasn't, make quick changes, and see visually how the room would come together! We thought we'd share that board with you!

The most shocking thing for Candis was how extensive their home improvement offerings were! She could order beautiful appliances, the most perfect farmhouse sink ever AND rugs and plants, all in one place. It was easy to search, easy to organize and most of all, fun to see it all come together.

The #1 Trend in homes…SHIPLAP!

The #1 Trend in homes…SHIPLAP!

Shiplap…how did we ever live without it?! It doesn’t matter if you discover it in an old house (remember when we found it in the Sparrow House Guest Bedroom?!) or create it from scratch in your new home, it really is the perfect “pop” in any home! We get a lot of questions about HOW to DIY Shiplap in your own home if it isn’t pre-existing in the structure. It may sound like a daunting task, but it really is doable for just about anyone to DIY. We recently did this in one of our Old Sweet Home episodes and walk you through the entire process there! You can watch the full episode of our DIY shiplap wall HERE.

ALSO….We are revealing our BIG announcement TOMORROW!!! Can you believe it’s finally here?! We have been itching to tell the world and can’t wait to finally share what we've been working on with each of you! Tune in tomorrow by following us on Instagram and Facebook!

2 Stunning Statement Walls

2 Stunning Statement Walls

Can you believe we are only 2 DAYS away from our big reveal?! We're so excited to be sharing TWO stunning statement wall ideas with you today! We always find ourselves breathless when we walk into a room with a giant mural wall to greet us and think that they make the perfect addition to ANY home-no matter what your style.

Nature Inspired Mural Walls

Design: Emily Henderson |  Photos by Tessa Neustadt

One of the best things about doing a vinyl or a wallpaper mural is the ability to put just about anything you could ever dream up on your wall. From creating a custom print or ordering a bold wallpaper, it’s a great way to use your creativity in a space. Not only that, but with so many easily removable wallpapers these days, it's easy to take down when your feeling the itch for some change (cue angels singing). It’s especially fun to create a mural that brings the magic of the outside world into your home. We recently created a DIY Vinyl Wallpaper in one of our episodes of Old Sweet Home. To view the full tutorial, click HERE.

Non-Traditional Material Walls

Design: Kelly Wearstler Photo: Roger Davies

When most people think "statement wall" the first thing that comes to mind usually involves a bold wallpaper. We love the idea of using more non-traditional material for a statement wall to really pack a punch. This tiled bathroom is the perfect example of how to use a bold pattern using a non-traditional material that really makes a statement that your guests will never forget!

We can’t wait to share our news with you all in just TWO days!!! Stay tuned for our BIG announcement this Sunday by following us on Instagram and Facebook!

3 of Our Favorite Staircases

3 of Our Favorite Staircases

Staircases are often on of the most ignored spaces in our homes, yet we all use and abuse them daily! Why not make something you have to walk up and down every day pretty??? In honor of our countdown until our announcement this Sunday (eeeeek!), here are our THREE favorite statement staircases for you to incorporate into your home without breaking the bank.

Painted Staircase

Design + Photo : Ishka Designs

We love the idea of painting staircases to create a statement in your house without breaking the bank! Pick a bold color you love and go with it (we're loving yellow lately)! If you're worried about the paint gradually rubbing off due to a high volume of foot traffic, paint only the face of the stairs and not the top (as pictured above).

 Mural Staircase

If your really wanting to make a statement, THIS is the staircase for you! Not only is this staircase a TOTALLY doable to DIY, it’s also really affordable and quick to do! To view the full tutorial by Old Home Love, click HERE.

Classic Wood Staircase

Design + Photo : Wit & Delight

If you're lucky enough to score one of these staircases that’s salvageable in your home, send us ALL the pictures!!! There is nothing more timeless and beautiful than the craftsmanship of a wood staircase. If your stairs are looking dingy and need a little loving, we recommend sanding them down and putting on a new coat of stain. It's an easy spruce up and the results are a classic staircase that you will love and have in your home forever!

4 Ways to Use Open Concept Shelving in Your Home

4 Ways to Use Open Concept Shelving in Your Home

Using open concept shelving in your home can seem sooo daunting at times. One of the most common questions we get is where to put it, and once you find a spot for it, WHAT exactly do you even do with it??? To celebrate our BIG announcement coming this Sunday, we’re sharing 4 of our favorite spaces and ways to use open shelving in your home. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram for our big reveal this Sunday!

The Kitchen

Design: Marie Flanigan Interiors | Photo: Whitney Eveport

The kitchen is one of our FAVORITE spaces to use open shelving. Not only is it a statement, but also SO functional. Simply throw some simple dish ware and breadboards on, and you’re ready to go! If you’re struggling to keep the shelves from looking ‘cluttered’ we generally recommend sticking with three colors or less, and grouping similar items together.

Bathroom Storage

Design: Nadine & Matt Abramacyk | Photo: Douglas Friedman

Open concept shelving is often harder to come by in the bathroom as most people fear all of their ‘personals’ on display for the world to see (and let’s be real, it’s a fear for good reason...). Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be that way…you really can hide your prescription drugs + deodorant AND have pretty bathroom shelving too! We recommend combining open shelving with lower cabinetry, and if that’s not an option, use baskets with lids to keep all of your personal bathroom items hidden + tidy.

Dining/Living Space

Design+ Photo : Jenny Komenda

One of the best parts about open shelving in a dining or living space is the creativity and endless possibilities that accompany it. Don’t shy away from using a variety of plants, textures, and art prints to create a playful and fun space!

Kid’s Bedroom

Design: Caitlin Wilson | Photo: Elijah Hoffman

Open shelving in the kid’s room is the perfect way to create a functional and fun space that your kids can really play in (that’s what it’s all about in the end right?!) Place open baskets on lower shelves so the kids have easy access to take out (and hopefully put away…we can dream right?) their toys and use upper shelving for the more “fluffy” decorative statement pieces.

Stay tuned for our big announcement this Sunday by following us on Instagram and Facebook !!! We can’t wait to share our news with you all in just FOUR days!!!

Win This House! Guest Suite Reveal

Win This House! Guest Suite Reveal

Caterpillar ---->Butterfly!

If you've watched Episode 4 of Win This House! You'll know that this room was a cute little addition onto the house that originally served as a summer kitchen, and finding shiplap intact under all the layers of wallpaper and drywall after all these years was better than just about ANYTHING, not to mention super rare...especially in Utah!!

All we know is that this house continues to surprise us in all the best ways!!

Considering the layout and location of the room, we wanted this space to feel like a cozy bungalow getaway. After coming back from the LIVE we got to work immediately, getting that shiplap painted and ready for the next few days of busywork ahead!

Since it was originally a summer kitchen, there wasn't a closet in this room so we went ahead and added one using a stock cabinet from IKEA with some molding on top and custom hardware to give it that "built-in" look. It's seriously the best trick ever and gave this room the space and storage it needed to be a proper bedroom.  Add our favorite carpet tiles on the floor and with the red rug (that you all so kindly chose too, thanks for the help, guys!) adding a much-needed pop of color, some artwork, comfy bedding too.  We were set!

Meanwhile, the Euro-inspired bathroom down the hall was getting its own makeover with beautiful black and white classic tile and another gorgeous stained glass window to let the light shine through.

So good, right? Euro-Inspired bathroom dreams do come true!

The finished result of this combined guest suite was so cozy and light and welcoming through and through, we hope you agree and love it as much as we do!

We're getting closer and closer to giving this house away, have you entered to win yet? You can do that on our Facebook page HERE, just click the Sweepstakes tab on the left-hand side of the page. If you're on mobile you can go to homelovenetwork.com/sweepstakes and enter there.

We can't wait!

Win This House! : Kids’ Bunkroom Reveal

Win This House! : Kids’ Bunkroom Reveal

We gotta say, kids' rooms are our JAM and this bunkroom does not disappoint!

It's full of all kinds of details that really make the space something special and truly unique. We think this delightful bunkroom really represents so many of the best things about childhood and we are absolutely thrilled to share it with you all, and especially the future occupants who get to call this room their own.

It's just so much fun unlocking our imaginations and letting them run wild a little bit when it comes to exploring all the things that have the potential to make a shared room for your kids really special and really smart, especially when it comes to capitalizing space and storage.

After the built-in bunks won out over twin beds in our LIVE broadcast vote, our team set to work on making these bunks and this creative space come to life, which was no small task indeed. It's almost unbelievable that this room used to be a small kitchen instead.

Nevertheless, we pressed on and in the reveal of Episode 3, you'll see that our team magically made it happen! We built the color theme for this design off a swatch of wallpaper we found during the demolition process and knew we had to somehow incorporate back into the space.

Bunkroom ahead! Some of our favorite features about this room include:

  • Full-size mattresses over twin (unlocking the potential for guests and adults to functionally use this space as well)
  • A built-in stairwell that leads to the upper bunk
  • Storage! And more storage...
  • Extra tall ceilings! Like, we exposed the beams and left them exposed and took the ceiling up into the attic because we can't help it. WE LOVE TALL CEILINGS! (Never fear, everything is well insulated and the electricity bill for this house should not be anything out of the ordinary.)
  • Flor carpet tiles. So easy, so fast! We love using these handy little squares!
  • Roman shades and curtains made from unexpected resources. We're talking shower curtains and table runners here...talk about multi-purpose!
  • Secret bookcase leading to sleeping porch - this is one of our FAVORITE features! We're so happy we could save that sleeping porch and turn it into an amazing little play space or retreat. It's just so fun!
  • Vintage maps and art, all free downloads included in the links below!
  • Schoolhouse Pendants that YOU CHOSE! Red reading sconces. There's just so much to love!

We decided on putting in full-size bunks over twin size bunks just so that we could cover our bases in case this room was to be used as something other than a kids' room. It was no small task as you can see, the kind of custom woodworking and craftsmanship that went into creating these beautiful beds was nothing short of miraculous and the end result made us feel so pleased.

High-fives all around!

If you haven't watched Episode 3 of Win This House! Now's your chance. Find the episode link HERE.

All the sourcing for this post is included at the end. No need to wonder where those pendant lights came from or how to score the free art downloads for yourself. We've included all the links below and made it so dang easy!
